Wiki Version:
**Presence-absence data used in beaked whale SDMs** Beaked whale PAM data were used as the response variable for SDMs because detection records reflect both species presence and foraging behaviour of beaked whales (Feyrer et al., 2023). Effort based sightings data had an insufficient number of records to support habitat modelling across the region. For each species, a single presence or absence point was included from each location where recordings were collected during towed array surveys (N = 10,649 for NBW, N = 8,884 for SBW) or with bottom-moored PAM recorders (N = 25). All species records were aggregated to the spatial resolution of the analysis using an envelope approach, resulting in only one presence or absence record per grid cell. For grid cells with both absence and presence observations, only a single presence record was retained. Predictor values were then extracted for all grid cells with observations, and any records with missing values were removed. The number of input records and species prevalence for models run at each scale is available in the Supplementary Material for Feyrer et al. 2023.
