Description: Objective: It is unclear whether vitamin blood levels impact cognitive function of alcohol dependents during routine alcohol detoxification treatment (RADT). Methods: To examine, we conduct a prospective, up to 3 weeks lasting study including 100 RADT-seeking adult chronic alcohol dependents without comorbidity requiring stabilization (intention-to-treat sample). Blood levels of various vitamins (thiamin, vitamin B6, B9, B12, holotranscobalamin, 25-OH cholecalciferol, homocysteine) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) are measured at admission and prior to regular discharge. Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) is carried out at admission. All patients should receive pharmacological alcohol withdrawal syndrome treatment as needed and are supplemented by oral thiamin (200 mg/day) across the study. Regression of the vitamin levels on MOCA should be adjusted for age, gender, and clinical covariates before investigating for causal relation by mediation analysis
