Leave a comment here or email me at: taltehan@mail.tau.ac.il ======== Statements such as ‘Some elephants are mammals’ can be accepted as true, adopting a logical interpretation, or rejected as false, adopting a pragmatic interpretation through the calculation of a scalar implicature (SI). In two fMRI experiments, we examined the role of task in SI processing. In a verification task, which yields diverse responses, items with SIs showed activations in frontal and prefrontal areas, including the left anterior MFG. An ROI analysis showed that this area was not activated in a picture-selection task, which exclusively results in pragmatic responses, therefore suggesting its involvement in a decision-making process in less restrictive contexts.
