Wiki Version:
Taking a micro-comparative approach within Romance null subject languages (NSLs), I argue that considerable cross-linguistic variation in the distributions of null subjects can be attributed to differences in the featural composition of overt subject pronouns. This will let us address the competition between *pro* & overt subject pronouns in NSLs in terms of Schlenker's (2005) pragmatic principle *Minimize Restrictors!*. This has an empirical advantage over the standard analyses of variation between NSLs, which overpredict categorical syntactic differences in the availability of *pro* in different NSLs.
