In this project, we investigate the question of how (mis)alignment of arguments on a grammatical function hierarchy (Subject > Object|Oblique) and thematic role hierarchy (Experiencer > Stimulus) influences sentence processing and comprehension. In a word-by-word SPR task with comprehension questions, we find that aligned configurations (where the relative position of each argument on these hierarchies remains constant) are processed and comprehended more easily than misaligned configurations (where the relative positions of arguments mismatches across hierarchies). This contributes to an existing body of work on how alignment affects sentence processing and production.
