Children in elementary school frequently struggle to develop ORF, particularly those with specific learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. This study describes the initial development of an app to enable students to improve ORF by practicing reading stories created with generative AI according to the student’s interests and cultural background and aligned with a reading curriculum. The study describes the collection of the teacher, parent and school administrator interviews and qualitative analyses that provided information to create the app’s prototype. The app follows universal design principles and learning experience design, incorporating a range of assistive technologies to ensure the success of students with learning differences. Future directions for development are discussed.
