Description: This project is a preregistered attempt to replicate and extend prior work on individual differences in reasoning, personality, and philosophical beliefs and judgments among both philosophers and laypeople (Study 1). METHODS Measures The reasoning measures include measures of reflection such as mathematical tasks like the Cognitive Reflection Test (e.g., Frederick 2005), logical tasks like Belief Bias Tests (e.g., Janis & Frick 1943), and verbal tasks (e.g., Sirota et al., in press). Personality will be measured by Big Five questionnaires (e.g., Gosling et al., 2010). Philosophical beliefs and judgments will be measured by the PhilPapers Survey (e.g., Bourget & Chalmers, 2013) and Moral Dilemma Batteries (e.g., Conway & Gawronski, 2013). RESULTS Analysis The project will report all zero-order correlations between all measures (in order to make future meta-analysis easier) and also report multivariate regression models predicting philosophical beliefs and judgments using with each reasoning measure, each personality trait, gender, and philosophical training. If any reasoning or personality measure predicts philosophical beliefs and judgments after controlling for gender and philosophical training, then mediation analyses will be run.
