Description: JHOVE is an open source file format identification, validation and characterisation tool for digital preservation. It is maintained by the Open Preservation Foundation as part of the OPF reference toolset. JHOVE is one of the most widely-used digital preservation tools; it can be used as a stand alone toole or as part of a digital preservation workflow. It is also embedded in several off-the-shelf digital preservation products. While JHOVE is widely used by the digital preservation community new users often find it intimidating. This short tutorial is intended as a quick getting started guide for new JHOVE users, rather than experienced developers. his session will give participants a practical overview of JHOVE. We will begin with a brief background of JHOVE, its history, purpose and capabilities. There follows a demonstration, starting with downloading and installing JHOVE then running it over selected example files. We then examine the results while explaining what the error messages mean and where to go for more information.
