Description: Focusing on L2 research writing strategies, this systematic literature review investigated what L2 research writing strategies have been used and which have been shown to be effective. The inclusion criteria focused on empirical studies that have investigated the academic English writing strategies conducted by L2 postgraduates or professional academics/researchers. The included 15 studies show that in L2 research article writing, the strategies of using languages from sources, using support from other people, using English as a direct tool to think and write, using previous experience to prepare and plan are commonly applied, and all have supporting evidence for their effectiveness. Implications for PhD candidates and academic researchers are suggested. Future research can contribute by doing large scale quantitative research and evaluating the effectiveness of different strategies more rigorously.
