We conducted a series of reading time studies on the processing of linear order in adverbials and were interested in how the parser integrates adverbials into the structure currently being built. While it is well accepted that argument parsing proceeds highly incrementally, little research has been conducted on the processing of adverbials. Our findings can be interpreted as evidence for an effect of the syntactic position of adverbials on processing. However, the time course of the effect differs across lexico-semantic adverbial types.
