Description: I am currently working on a monograph about education for harmony. The monograph will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2023. The mass educational system and its practices were born in the light of the industrial revolution, meanwhile in today’s world a very different educational system is required; a system that propels students to think, respect other peoples’ perspectives and to learn to live and work together to deal with the many 21st century issues. In an interconnected and interdependent world, it is essential to move away from tolerating diversity to appreciating it, from stereotyping to empathetic understanding and from civic duties to intrinsic responsibility taking. Delors et al (1996) and Sustainable Development Goal 4.7 (at times titled: Learning To Live Together Sustainably, UNESCO, 2018) have emphasized “Learning To Live Together” (LTLT); with the former suggesting it to be one of the four education pillars. Similarly, various Indian philosophers Mahatma Gandhi, the Dalai Lama, Aurobindo Ghose, Rabindranath Tagore and Jiddu Krishnamurthi, have foregrounded various local equivalents of Learning To Live Together Harmoniously (LTLTH) and founded schools that target education for LTLTH, some of which have existed for more than a century. The book explores leverages ideologies and practices of teachers within these schools to develop frameworks to conceptualize LTLTH and translate it to practice. The book proposes a different vision for education and explores potential practices for these visions making it extremely relevant to academics, masters and undergraduate students from both education and development studies and also to PGCE (teacher training) students.
