Description: This is a survey of the intonation of mainstream English varieties and a selection of contact varieties. We explore the challenges posed by their diverging prosodic structures, in terms of both prominence and edge-marking, and observe that an account of the intonation of current-day ‘Englishes’ needs to cover a broad range of typological phenomena, providing us with a chance to observe prosodic variation within one language that is usually only available to crosslinguistic studies.
