**Original citation.** Tabibnia, G., Satpute, A.B., Lieberman, M.D. (2008). The sunny side of fairness: Preference for fairness activates reward circuitry (and disregarding unfairness activates self-control circuitry). *Psychological Science, 19*(4), 339-347. **Target of replication.** We seek to replicate the original authors' finding that fair offers were associated with activation in the ventral striatum, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala, and midbrain (t(11)s range from 3.81 to 4.85, contrast of high fairness vs low fairness trials). Furthermore, the original authors found that accepting unfair offers increases right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex activation, (t(11) =5.39, prep > .99, accepted unfair offers compared to baseline), insula activation was decreased when accepting unfair offers in contrast to rejecting them (t(11) = 4.06, prep > .99), and an inverse correlation was found between VLPFC activation and insula activation (r = -.77, prep > .99). Z-stats were reported in the place of t-stats due to the use of FSL software. The software used in the original experiment, SPM99, was no longer available for use. **A priori replication criteria.** A successful replication would find that fair offers are associated with activation in the ventral striatum, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala, and midbrain. 1. In order to test whether reward regions are activated in relation to high fairness vs low fairness offers, we will contrast the maps of the high fairness offers with the map of the low fairness offers. 2. In order to test whether VLPFC is related to the acceptance of unfair offers, we will compare the map of accepted unfair offers to baseline. 3. In order to test whether insula activation is diminished when unfair offers are accepted, we will contrast the map of accepted unfair offers to rejected unfair offers. 4. In order to test the inverse relation between VLPFC and insula, we will extract parameter estimates from the VLPFC cluster identified in analyses #2 and the insula cluster identified in analyses #3 and test for a significant, negative correlation. 5. We will test whether insula activation mediates the relation between VLPFC activation and rate of accepting unfair offers using the Sobel test to investigate signification reduction in the relation between VLPFC and acceptance of unfair offer rate is reduced when insula activation is controlled for.
