Wiki Version:
CANMAT has updated the Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in Adults, now available as an open-access publication in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/epub/10.1177/07067437241245384 Supplementary materials are available in the *Files tab / Supplementary Materials for the Can J Psychiatry 2024 folder.* The 2023 Update is a major revision from the previous CANMAT 2016 guidelines. It retains the question-answer format, Level of evidence criteria, and lines of recommendation as per previous versions of the CANMAT depression guidelines. However, the evidence appraisal for the 2023 Update focuses on systematic reviews and meta-analyses published since 2015, the end date for literature searches for the CANMAT 2016 guidelines. The document "Guidelines for the Guidelines" outlines the process and procedures for the development of the 2023 Update (see Files). The updated guidelines are organized along a "care pathway" for patients with MDD, from assessment/diagnosis to selection and sequencing of treatments through to maintenance treatment and options for more complex or refractory cases. Each of the 8 primary questions have Summary Tables of recommendations with evidence grading. A rigorous process involving the 40+ expert members of the author group was followed to ensure that recommendations have expert consensus. Controversial recommendations are highlighted with more detailed discussion. To make the content more accessible to clinicians, only key references for the 8 primary questions are included. Expanded reference lists are avaiable in the Supplementary Materials, in addition to the literature searches and evidence appraisal data (see Files). People with lived experience were involved from the beginning of the guidelines development process. Patient partners (listed in the Acknowledgments section) helped formulate the questions, were represented in the core editorial group, and reviewed the draft recommendations.
