(**Note:** This project is ongoing, and the current talk title is distinct
from the title shown in the abstract PDF. Despite the change in
terminology, our central claims remain the same.)
It is well known that languages show rich variation in the embedding
strategies employed in attitude reports; far less variety is found in the
formal semantic accounts put forth for attitudes. The goal of this project
is to expand the cross-linguistic perspective both empirically and formally
by providing semantic analyses for the two embedding strategies found with
attitude verbs in Oromo (Cushitic): verbal nominalization, and embedding
under *akka* 'as'. Based on extended fieldwork with a native speaker
consultant along with insight from the literature, we argue that most
mainstream accounts of attitude predication – in particular, accounts that
assume propositional embedding – do not readily extend to Oromo. Instead,
we propose an analysis based on the embedding of *situation types*, a
subsort of intensional object that we treat as distinct from propositions.
