Wiki Version:

Abstract: In 2016, the publisher Springer Nature introduced a suite of standard research data policies, allowing journals to select the most appropriate for their discipline and community [https://dx.doi.org/10.2218/ijdc.v12i1.531]. They have subsequently been adopted by more than 1,000 journals. The policies enable researchers to achieve good practice in the sharing and archiving of research data in accordance with community expectations; facilitate authors' compliance with institutional and research funder requirements to share data; and allow authors to receive advice and support from the publisher in depositing research data. Some researchers have asked for more help from the publisher, and in 2017 Springer Nature introduced a pilot service to provide additional support to researchers who wish to make their data available alongside their published articles. This Data Support Service provides hands-on assistance to researchers in uploading their data to a repository, selecting an appropriate licence, enhancing metadata, and cross-referencing the data and its associated publication. The service is available to authors through the publisher's manuscript tracking systems, and on a limited basis for previously published authors and conference proceedings.

We will describe the implementation of the Data Support Services at Springer Nature, how data curation standards have been developed and how the data services integrate with the established publishing workflow. We will also discuss lessons learned during the pilot and potential future developments for supporting researchers and institutions to follow good practice in sharing and archiving research data.

Rebecca Grant Research Data Manager Open Research Group Springer Nature The Campus | Trematon Walk | Wharfdale Road | London N1 9FN T: +44 (0) 2070144273 M: +44 (0) 7768034561 rebecca.grant@springernature.com www.springernature.comhttp://www.springernature.com/ ORCiD: 0000-0002-7614-0806

DISCLAIMER: This e-mail is confidential and should not be used by anyone who is not the original intended recipient.
