This research applies quantitative text analytics methods upon a corpus of ancient Greek texts to evaluate two competing hypotheses: (1) The Big Gods hypothesis, which associates the emergence of beliefs in powerful and moralizing deities with an increase in societal complexity, and (2) the Affluence hypothesis, which associates the changes in religious domain primarily with economic development taking place during the so-called Axial Age period.
