Wiki Version:
SAMPLE SIZE & SAMPLE DEMOGRAPHICS
We will use our laboratory subject pool, consisting mainly of students of Prague universities. Currently, there are 513 subjects (70% female) meeting the study criteria of age and race in our subject pool. However, the registration in our laboratory is open, so new subjects can register and became available for participation during the course of data collection. We expect collecting data from about 110 participants, in order to meet the requirement of having at least 50 subjects per condition. We may collect more if we have trouble finding enough male participants (i.e. in case we have more than 80% female participants in our sample). If that happens, we will analyze data with randomly discarded data of corresponding number of female participants in order to not bias the results with overrepresentation of females. After collecting data from 110 participants, we will check whether we have enough participants in both conditions (i.e. at least 50 in each of them) and whether we have at least 20 male participants altogether (after checking for possible data exclusions – see section DATA EXCLUSION for details). If not, we will proceed with further sessions (of about 5-12 participants) until the above stated conditions are met.

RECRUITMENT
All participants will be recruited via e-mail sent to their addresses entered during the registration to our laboratory subject pool (for the text of the e-mail, see “Materials” node). Only 18-25 years old participants studying at a university at the time of their registration (which was at maximum 4 months before the study) will be invited. The study will be presented as a “study of perception and memory” consisting of several task administered mainly on computers in a laboratory setting. We will stress that adequate vision is a requirement for participation. Participants will be also informed about a financial reward of 100 CZK (approx. 5 USD) for their participation.

MATERIALS
We will use all the materials from the original study with a few exceptions. All instructions will be in Czech and the video will be dubbed. We will use a Czech crossword puzzle similar to the one used in the original study. All materials with an exception of the crossword puzzle, listing of capital cities and description of the robber will be administered on a computer. Therefore, some of the instructions will be adapted to make them more suited for a computer administration. Detailed information about the materials can be found under the “Materials” node.

PROCEDURE
At the beginning of a session, participants will be greeted and seated by an experimenter and instructed to follow instructions on a computer screen. Afterwards they will be randomly assigned to the experimental or control condition by used experimental software (OpenSesame). All instructions and experimental stimuli (i.e. video and lineup) will be presented on a computer screen. Participants will be wearing headphones during the whole experimental session. Crossword puzzle, description of the robber and naming of the capital cities will be done on paper. At the end, debriefing with information about the study will be presented and participants will be paid by the experimenter. For the texts of all instructions, please see “Materials” node.

DATA EXCLUSION
We will exclude all participants that are non-white, younger than 18, older than 25 and/or have a non-minor, uncorrected eye defect (e.g. need to wear glasses but do not have them on during the study). Furthermore, we will exclude all participants with missing answers (in the case of description, list of capitals, and crossword a blank paper/crosword will be considered a missing answer). Finally, we will exclude participants who will answer that they were informed about the experimental procedure or study’s hypothesis from other participants, that they know the tested hypothesis, or that they know what the verbal overshadowing effect is.
