The aim of this WODC-funded report is to gain more insight into the current knowledge about processes of intergenerational transmission of jihadist and extremist ideologies more generally, within a family context. Using a systematic literature review and interviews with practitioners, this exploratory study focuses on the following research question: What is known about the nature and extent of the intergenerational transmission of jihadism and other extremist ideologies? First, we will look at what is known about the prevalence of intergenerational transmission of such belief systems. In addition, we will examine the mechanisms underlying the transmission process; the protective and reinforcing factors associated with it; and their long-term consequences. Finally, we will consider the options for interventions to counter the intergenerational transmission of jihadist and broader extremist ideas within a family context.
