Description: Reading comprehension proficiency is a critical component for academic success. Unfortunately, not all individuals develop the skills necessary to be a successful comprehender and research has suggested that certain developmental groups are at a greater risk for experiencing academic difficulties as a result of poor reading comprehension. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent developmental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Although not listed as a core deficit in ADHD, difficulties related to reading comprehension have been well-documented and may, in part, contribute to academic challenges commonly reported in ADHD. Several studies have reported reading comprehension weaknesses in individuals with ADHD however, no research to date has summarized the evidence available on this topic. Further exploration into how those with ADHD perform on reading comprehension tasks is therefore warranted to gain a better understanding of how potential difficulties impact academic performance early on. The aim of this scoping review is to therefore examine and summarize a broad range of research surrounding reading comprehension abilities in individuals with ADHD.
