Treatments for **depression** can use further improvement, through a specific focus on mechanisms governing **Repetitive Negative Thinking** (RNT: Ehring & Watkins, 2008), because RNT is an important causal mechanism, with deficits in executive functioning (often found in the context of depression) likely being a cognitive vulnerability at the root of RNT. Therefore, **Cognitive Control Training** (CCT: Siegle, Ghinassi, & Thase, 2007) has potential as an innovative strategy for depression (Motter et al., 2016), presumably by reducing the tendency to ruminate/worry (Koster, Hoorelbeke, Onraedt, Owens, & Derakshan, 2017). Previous research has indeed indicated that CCT reduces maladaptive emotion regulation (rumination) but fails to increase adaptive emotion regulation (Hoorelbeke et al., 2016). Therefore, to improve emotion regulation in a comprehensive manner, it would be interesting to combine CCT with more traditional, **group-based psychological treatment programs**, in which alternative emotion regulation techniques are a core focus.
