Wiki Version:
Implementation of the official protocol --------------------------------------- **Experimenters** *Five undergraduate research assistants will be conducting the testing. All of them read through the step-by-step protocol, received a demonstration on the procedure, and practiced running through the procedure with another research assistant. Three of the research assistants have collected data on previous ego depletion studies, and three of them have used Eprime to conduct previous studies. All research assistants have complete methods and laboratory courses and have completed human subjects training (through CITI)* **Piloting / training** *All research assistants practiced running through the experiment on one another. Those data files were deleted prior to collecting actual data.* **Experimenter knowledge of expected outcomes** *Because I have run previous ego depletoin studies in my lab, the research assistants are aware of the phenomenon. The outcomes of those previous studies have been variable (most have not found an effect consistent with ego depletion) so I believe that the research assistants are somewhat skeptical of the effect. They are also aware of the purpose of this registered replication report.* **Recruiting** *Participants will be recruited from a subject pool at my university (Cal State San Marcos). They are all enrolled in lower-division undergraduate courses in psychology (intro, stats, or methods). The study is listed using an online experiment scheduling system (Sona) using the title, "Word and Number Recognition and Reaction Time." Eligibility criteria are described as being between 18-30 years of age and being a native English speaker.* **Sample, subjects, and randomization** *Data will be collected from a minumum of 84 participants in both conditions. A randomizer was used to determine the order of the conditions in blocks of 10 (with 5 in each condition in each block of 10). Data collection will be stopped after a completed block of 10 when each condition has a minumum of 84 participants that meet the inclusion criteria. After completing the 17th block of 10 participants, we will examine how many participants must be excluded and continue to collect data in blocks of 10 until there are minumums of 84 in each condition. Participants will be asked to indicate their age, gender, and native language at the beginning of the experiment.* **Setting/Lab/Equipment** *Participants will be run one-at-a-time in my laboratory space. The space contains two rooms: a testing room and an adjacent prep room. Research assistants will wait in the prep room while participants are completing the tasks. The test room contains a Dell PC running Eprime 2.0 (runtime license provided by the RRR group).*
