Wiki Version:
This working paper looks at the factors associated with Ghanaian Sign Language (GSL) emergence and development. The paper answered two main questions: 1) To what extent was oralism propagated in Ghana? and 2) what/who are the key players to GSL development in Ghana? This paper relied on both secondary and primary data to answer the research questions. The result shows that educators faced numerous challenges in their effort to adopt oralism, which allowed the Deaf to be resilient in making sign language thrive amidst the context of oralism. Another key findings in this paper were unearthing some of the forgotten Ghanaian heroes and key contributors to GSL development
