### Participants Participants are recruited from individuals visiting the Glasgow Science Centre who volunteer to take part in a study on how family relatedness shows in the face (see [Study Information][1]). Two- and three-dimensional photographs are collected using a DI3D camera system (see below). All volunteers also provide demographic data (age, sex, own and parents' ethnicity) and information on any orthodontic treatment or facial surgery they have received (see [Questionnaire][2]). If part of a group, data on if, and how, each volunteer is related to each other is also recorded; for romantic partners and friends, relationship/friendship length is also recorded ([see example][3]). All individuals give written consent for their images to be used in scientific research (see [Study Consent Form for Adults][4]). For children, verbal assent is obtained, and childrens' parents or guardians also provide written consent (see [Study Consent Form for Children][5]). ### Camera rig and file formats Images are collected using a [DI3D system][6]. This is a passive stereo photogrammetry based solution for the creation of accurate, ultra-high resolution, full colour 3D surface images using six standard digital stills cameras (Canon EOS100D; lenses: Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM). The software DI3Dcapture (version 6.8.4) is used to capture participants' faces from six different angles. The frontal image captured by the middle top camera will be used for 2D analyses and stimuli creation. The 3D images are generated using DI3Dview (version 6.8.9), which creates both a texture map in the BMP file format (at a resolution of 1MP minimum) as well as a three-dimensional mesh from the raw data that will be exported in the Wavefront OBJ file format. ### Capturing setup and procedure Participants will be seated at a distance of 90 cm from the rig (in the case of very small children, images will be taken standing). The height of the camera rig is adjusted via a remote-controlled lifting column. Two remote-controlled flash units (Elinchrom D-Lite RX 2) are used for lighting. ### Capturing procedure Participants will be instructed to wear a headband to ensure their face and ears are not obstructed by hair, and to remove any glasses and scarves, jackets or other items of clothing covering the neck. Participants will be asked to sit (or stand) upright and look into the top middle camera. One smiling and one neutral image will be collected of each participant. For smiling images, participants will be instructed to smile as they would do naturally. For neutral images, participants will be asked to maintain a neutral facial expression, with their back teeth lightly touching, and their lips lightly touching (neither should be clenched). Correct positioning is checked via the capturing software’s live view.
