Wiki Version:
The four immeasurables meditations (FIMs) are known to cultivate four different attitudes in Buddhism. However, in the field of psychology, the terms are often mixed and the effects of these meditations have not been well differentiated yet. Moreover, the research on meditation is dominated by multiple sessions study design and lack findings on one-shot meditations. Therefore, this study aims to provide the first comparison between immediate effects of one-shot loving-kindness meditation (LKM) and compassion meditation (CM). **Procedure** University students will be randomly allocated to three groups including LKM, CM and an active control group. In LKM and CM conditions students will be asked to practice a corresponding meditation for 15 minutes, while in the control condition students will be asked to solve crosswords for 15 minutes. The self-reported emotions will be measured before and after completing the assigned task using Manikins for Arousal and Valence (SAM) and Emotional Word List. In addition, prior to the task, participants' daily emotions will be measured with Modified Differential Emotions Scale (mDES). All stages of the experiment will be conducted via the online survey platform called 1ka.si. The **key **hypotheses**** are as follows: (1) Both LKM and CM conditions would exhibit significantly increased other-focused positive emotions compared with the Control condition. (2) The LKM condition would exhibit significantly increased happiness and overall emotional valence (i.e., pleasure) compared with the other two conditions, whereas the CM condition would exhibit significantly increased sadness and decreased overall emotional valence compared with the other conditions. (3) Both LKM and CM conditions would exhibit no significant change in low arousal positive emotions compared with the Control condition.
