Wiki Version:
This OSF-page provides all relevant documents, code and data for the research article "Unequal Framing in Times of Hardship? How Newspapers from Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and Switzerland Portray Syrian and Ukrainian Refugees – Evidence from a Deductive and Inductive Automated Content Analysis" by Lukas Benedikt Hoffmann and Michael Hameleers.
Final Code Version and Datasets -------------------------------
This folder entails the datasets for the four countries as sampled from NexisUni (a minor cleaning and structuring step was done in R). These datasets are labelled:
- "Germany_final.csv" - "spain_final.csv" - "Switzerland_final.csv" - "UK_final.csv"
These datasets are needed to run the following python code for the preparation and execution of the LDA models used in our study. This is the code:
- Hoffmann & Hameleers 2024 LDA for Manuscript Final.ipynb - as HTML file: Hoffmann & Hameleers 2024 LDA for Manuscript Final.html
Further, we have stored the following datasets which are the final results of the topic modeling with each row representing an article, including a column on the *most dominant topic* of the respective article. We used the dominance for the analyses. These datasets are labelled:
- corpus_topic_df_CH.csv - corpus_topic_df_DE.csv - corpus_topic_df_ES.csv - corpus_topic_df_UK.csv
You will need these four datasets and the four original ones in order to execute the following python code used for the results and visualisations of our analyses:
- Hoffmann & Hameleers 2024 Results for Manuscript Final.ipynb - as HTML file: Hoffmann & Hameleers 2024 Results for Manuscript Final.html

Results and Visualizations -----------------------------
This folder entails the datasets for the outputs of our analysis. The following visualisations were used in the manuscript:
- Final Framing of Refugees in German Newspapers in 2015 and 2022.png - Final Framing of Refugees in Spanish Newspapers in 2015 and 2022.png - Final Framing of Refugees in British Newspapers in 2015 and 2022.png - Final Framing of Refugees in Swiss Newspapers in 2015 and 2022.png - Final Framing of Refugees in All Newspapers in 2015 and 2022.png
Further, we here provide pyLDAvis visualizations. They are interactive HTML-files that allow to portray the proximity, size and overlap of topics. You can download them and then open them in your browser (it is not possible to access them directly by clicking on the HTML-files within OSF). Hovering over a topic will show the contribution of different terms to the topic and some other additional information. These are the respective files:
- DOWNLOAD_TO_OPEN_pyLDAvis_Germany.html - DOWNLOAD_TO_OPEN_pyLDAvis_Spain.html - DOWNLOAD_TO_OPEN_pyLDAvis_Switzerland.html
