Description: Investigations of effects of semantic variables on picture naming have often been inconclusive, with some studies reporting significant and others non-significant effects. Here we test if the specific naming tasks used could be an explanation for these discrepancies: While most previous studies have used standard picture naming, other studies, particularly those reporting significant effects of semantic variables, have used speeded naming tasks that require participants to prioritise naming speed over accuracy. This task has been suggested to cause enhanced effects of item-inherent word characteristics due to disruptions of cognitive control and resulting modulations of responsiveness to input. To test this, we compared effects of six feature-based semantic variables in standard and speeded deadline picture naming.
