Please review the [sampling protocol][4] and [sampling data sheets][5]. The goal of this project is to coordinate data collection efforts among scientists interested in, or already addressing, the question of how different carbon sources (e.g. phytoplankton, ice algae, detritus) differentially support lake consumers (zooplankton, benthos) throughout the year. Methodologically, this is a potentially challenging question. For example, separating detrital from algal material is difficult and the stable isotope signatures of different resources may overlap. Coordinating data collection efforts and methodological approaches (e.g. stable isotopes, fatty acids, pigment analysis) would drastically improve our ability to effectively answer this question and allow us to eventually synthesize and compare findings across system types.
