This site description previously was: # Phytophthora smallRNA Database Recent years have seen an explosion in the importance of RNA-based silencing systems in both transcriptional and posttranscritional gene regulation. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) allows for quantitative profiling of small RNA populations and has led to an increase in the discovery of small RNA in various organisms. Most eukaryotes contain silencing pathways that are dependent on small RNAs, which function as guide molecules and lead to the degradation and repression of transcripts. Phytophthora infestans and P. sojae, which have recently been sequenced, belong to an important group of plant pathogens that cause multibillion-dollar damage to crops, ornamental plants, and natural environments. Their recent phylogenetic placement in the Chromalveolate supergroup, which has undergone minimal analysis of small RNA pathways to date, along with their major agricultural impact makes the Phytophthora species ideal for unique small RNA pattern analysis.
