**DATA EXCLUSION** The experimenters will keep a lab log. On the basis of the lab log, data may be excluded prior to analysing the data. Data will be excluded if there are technical failures, procedural errors by the experimenter, no sufficient visual acuity (not > 80% correct answers in the visual-acuity test), or knowledge that an unexpected object would appear (i.e., they were familiar with inattentional blindness and realized that this was what we were testing in the inattentional blindness task). Also, participants will be excluded from the analysis if they noticed the distractor numbers during the inattentional blindness phase or are unable to correctly recognize the presented numbers in at least 80% of the full-attention trials. Any excluded data and the reason for exclusion will be noted in the data file and lab log. **ANALYSIS** We will use mean reaction times (median reaction time as control analysis) as dependent measure for our planned analyses. We will use a minimum reaction time of 100ms as cut-off criteria to exclude accidental reactions. A 2x2 repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) of reaction times with the two-level factors "condition" (congruent, incongruent) and "load" (low load, high load) will be conducted. Partial eta-squared is reported as a measure of effect size for the ANOVA. We expect the ANOVA to yield a significant interaction effect demonstrating that reaction times are faster in the congruent than in the incongruent condition and that this difference is more pronounced under low load than under high load. Two analyses are the bases for interpreting the ANOVA results: Manipulation Check I: Congruency Effect We expect reaction times to be higher for incongruent than for congruent trials under low load. Manipulation Check II: Load Effect We expect reaction times to be higher for high load than for low load trials in congruent trials. We will either see significant main effects in the conducted ANOVA or test these assumptions by conducting two-tailed dependent t-tests with an alpha-level of 5% to test whether reaction time differs in a) congruent and incongruent trials in the low load condition. b) low and high load trials in the congruent condition. Cohens d is reported as a measure of effect size for the t-tests.
