The research community is currently not (re-) using publicly available data to their full potential. This project aims to set the ground for enhancing re-usablility of open data in the field of fear conditioning research and thereby facilitating replicability, transparency and efficient use of sparse resources. The first step to achieve this aim is to inventory the "status quo".
This project provides a curated collection of publicly available data-sets in fear conditioning research (see component). This is a first step which sets the stage towards a homogenized and dynamically growing database, the 'FEAR-BASE'.
The curated data collection is based on a google data set search and a survey among members of the research network EIFEL-ROF (& friends) as well as an OSF search. Currently we have identified 103 publicly available data sets with nearly 8839 participants from human fear conditioning studies published until 05/2022. First results have been recently published as a preprint which can be accessed here https://psyarxiv.com/8crk3.
An previous summary based on fewer studies is provided in the pdf entiteled "prel_results_fear_base_inventory_20210524".
This current number of identified data sets (N=103) is sufficient to make a summary of the status quo in data sharing practices in the field of fear conditioning research and initiate discussions in the field to find agreement on field-specific data sharing practices, ontologies and data structures.
The next stage that we are currently working on is the generation of a living database that will be used in a consortium kind of way.
We are supported by a pychology-specific research data management center (ZPID in Trier, Germany) on generating a GUI for submission of new datasets to the FEAR-BASE that will ensure an automatized common structure and ontology without putting the formatting burden on individual researchers.
