Description: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is characterized by reported adverse responses to environmental exposures of common chemical agents (e.g., perfumes, paint, cleaning products, and other inhaled or ingested agents) in low doses tolerated in the general population. This project will use a scoping review to explore the literature. Results will be documented in an evidence map showing the research volume and content. The work will inform a systematic review which will address specific questions to be answered with the existing evidence. The systematic review will use a comprehensive search in multiple research databases, will undertake steps to reduce reviewer errors and bias, data abstract information transparently, critically appraise the identified research, and document the body of evidence as well as remaining uncertainties for evidence statements. Areas of intererst include the definition, diagnostic tools, and prevalence of MCS, MCS as a distinct disorder and possible underlying mechanism; as well as treatment and management of MCS, The project is funded by the Marilyn Brachman Hoffman Foundation.
