Description: For decades, much contention and debate has dominated the literature as researchers have sought to understand and define play. In recent years, increasing emphasis has been placed on ascertaining children’s perspectives of play (Howard, 2019; Wood & Attfield, 2005), in line with a broader children’s rights-based approach and participatory research recommendations (United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, 2009; United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989; 2013). To investigate this further, this scoping review aims to add to the emerging body of evidence surrounding children’s perspectives of play and provide a comprehensive map of the available research in this area. A key aspect of this review involves consultation with children’s research advisory groups which is very much centred within a children’s rights-based approach (UNCRC, 1989; 2009) to ensure children have direct input into informing this research agenda and decision making. Overall, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, just two studies have attempted to systematically review evidence based on children’s perceptions of play (Goodhall & Atkinson, 2017; Graham et al., 2017) however no review to date has examined children’s conceptualisations of play more broadly as a construct. In this sense, the objectives of this study align with broader aims of scoping reviews, proposed by Arksey & O’Malley (2005), in that we aim to investigate the extent, range and nature of research within the field and consult directly with stakeholders as part of this process.
