Wiki Version:
To increase the generalizability of our findings, we employed a quota approach to obtain a sample of intact married heterosexual dyads from the United States that approximates the distribution of age and political affiliation of married adults in the United States. Both age ([Wright, 2013][1]; [Wright, Bae & Funk, 2013][2] and political affiliation (unpublished data in [Smith, Marsden, Hout & Kim, 2011][3]) are linked to pornography use in a large representative sample of Americans. The population parameters were estimated by examining the distribution of age (between 25-54) across political affiliation among married women who participated in the American General Social Survey in 2014 (see [Smith, Marsden, Hout & Kim, 2011][4]). The desired sampling quotas were calculated by applying the proportional distributions onto a desired sample of 200 married women. The resulting quota targets were as follows: ![target quotas][5] [Qualtrics Panels Management][6] was then employed to contact existing American female panel participants between the ages of 25-54 with an invitation to participate in our study. Female partners were in turn asked to recruit their male partners and a formal email invitation was sent to women's partners with a link to the survey. Participants only counted towards the quota when both male and female partners completed all measures, passed two attention checks, and provided adequate variation in their responses. Once quota categories filled, unneeded participants were directed out of the survey before they reached the end, but were still compensated for their time. As quotas filled, further invitations to participate were only directed towards women who matched the characterisitics of unfilled quota categories until the target sample was obtained. Although only female characteristics were meant to be counted towards the quota, an initial programming error led to men being terminated from the study prematurely if they did not suit the female quota targets. This was particularly problematic for the male partners of women aged 50-54, as some were older than 54 years of age. This problem was addressed early, and all men who's surveys were terminated prematurely were contacted at a later point with an apology and renewed invitation to participate in the study.
