Description: Surgeons are under pressure to maintain and improve performance over the course of their careers while juggling many other professional and personal responsibilities. However, existing opportunities for continuing professional development are considered suboptimal. The practice of surgical coaching is gaining increasing attention as a possible modality to help practicing surgeons optimize performance inside and outside of the operating room and improve overall wellbeing. The objective of this scoping review is to characterize quantitative studies on coaching interventions for practicing surgeons to (1) understand how they define surgical coaching, (2) examine how the different coaching programs are designed, implemented, and evaluated, and (3) identify any relevant research gaps.
