The Typical Face: In-Group/Out-Group Differences in Judgments of Typicality for Black and White Faces

What do we think of as a typical face for a given social group? Study 1 (N = 946) compared two accounts of category structure, family resemblance versus ideal models. Faces near the feature average were rated as most typical by in-group participants whereas faces with more extreme feature sets were seen as most typical by out-group participants. Study 2 (N = 520) investigates consequences for social inference.
