Description: The aim of this project is to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of psychosocial resources at the individual, social, and societal level and their association with positive mental states (e.g., subjective well-being, happiness, life satisfaction). Our systematic review seeks to quantify these associations and include (and contrast) both hedonistic and eudaimonic positive mental states, rather than focusing solely on happiness. Thereby, our systematic review will allow to study between-outcome differences. Moreover, for the first time, we will examine the impact of cultural moderators on the associations of psychosocial resources and positive mental states. For this purpose, we will use Hofstede’s model of cultural dimensions (Hofestede et al., 2010), which classifies cultural differences across six bipolar dimensions (1. individualism vs. collectivism, 2. power distance, 3. indulgence vs. restraint, 4. motivation towards achievement and success, 5. uncertainty avoidance, 6. long-term vs. short-term orientation). Furthermore, for a more comprehensive picture on culture, publicly available global metrics of Education, Industrialization, Richness, and Democratic values (EIRDness) will be used to examine how these factors moderate the associations at an economic and political level (Chen et al., 2024; Sakaluk, & Daniel, 2022; Syed, & Kathawalla, 2022). Culture and language are deeply intertwined, mutually shaping one another. The universal positivity bias in human language (Dodds et al., 2015), when considered in moderation analyses, could provide valuable insights into how cultural and linguistic structures influence the relationship between psychosocial resources and hedonic or eudaimonic mental states.
