In this hands-on session, participants will have the opportunity to create their own data management plan using the online DMP Assistant platform. **[DMP Assistant](https://assistant.portagenetwork.ca/)** is a bilingual tool for preparing data management plans (DMPs). The tool follows best practices in data stewardship and walks researchers step-by-step through key questions about data management. * Create an account and select a template to start writing your DMP * Answer the questions that are relevant to your work, and follow guidance embedded * Add collaborators to your DMP to co-edit or review * Export your DMP into a PDF or other file format to share with granting agencies and colleagues _This session is part of the [Pathways to Research Data Management series](https://libguides.uvic.ca/c.php?g=721709)._ --- ### Activity Instructions **Pre-class activities:** 15 min **Face-to-face presentation:** 30 min **Face-to-face activities:** 60 min **Instructor:** Shahira Khair, Data Curation Librarian (skhair@uvic.ca); Kathleen Matthews, Science Data Librarian (kmatthews@uvic.ca) --- **Step 1: Pre-Class Videos, Readings, & Exercises** * Read about data management planning on the UVic Library RDM Guide (5 min): https://libguides.uvic.ca/researchdata/planning * Create and activate an account with the Portage DMP Assistant (5 min): https://assistant.portagenetwork.ca/ --- **Step 2: In-Class Active Learning Activities & Instruction** * [Presenter slides](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1h2ca7EDiyNZtvTszY14JqHMhHpkhuSEbvStRQWk6Y-w/edit?usp=sharing) --- * [Example 1 (Sciences)](https://zenodo.org/record/4062486) * [Example 2 (Social Sciences)](https://zenodo.org/record/4019309) * [Example 3 (Humanities)](https://zenodo.org/record/4062484) --- * [Case Study 1 (Sciences)](https://osf.io/asr3g/) * [Case Study 2 (Social Sciences/Education)](https://osf.io/p39en/) * [Case Study 3 (Health/Nursing)](https://osf.io/pw3xt/) * [Case Study 4 (Engineering)](https://osf.io/g496h/) --- **Step 3: More Resources, Post-Class Assessment & Course Feedback** [Research Data Management Data Guide](https://researchdata.library.ubc.ca/files/2018/05/RDM_DataGuide_V05.1_20180508.pdf) (University of British Columbia) A comprehensive guide for Canadian researchers, which addresses the basics of data management plans, metadata and data organization, data storage and security, and data sharing and re-use.
