Wiki Version:
![Hashtag Green OA (open access) Day][1] What is Green OA Day? --------------------- Green OA Day is a grassroots library initiative to promote and educate about green open access (OA). Green OA Day 2025 will be held on **Monday, March 17**. Also referred to as self-archiving, green OA is when authors make a version of their published, pay-to-access works freely accessible on some kind of website or repository so that anyone with internet access can read and learn from it. Green OA is a cost-effective and equitable pathway to making research open access, especially for authors who can’t afford to pay the article processing fees charged by Gold OA journals. It’s also a pathway towards meeting funder requirements for open access! ---------- How to Get Involved ------------------- Promote Green OA on your campus this March 17, 2025! There are lots of ways you can get involved. - Promote your institutional repository - Use images from our toolkit to share about green OA on social media - Organize an event to teach students and faculty about tools for green OA ([Open Policy Finder][2]) - Join our Green OA Day community call on March 26, 2005 ---------- Outreach Materials ------------------ The 2025 toolkit includes a visual guide and .png promotional images. If you want to create custom promotional materials for your Green OA Day events, check out [last year's toolkit][3] to download individual image assets! **[Download the 2025 Toolkit][4]** The theme for 2025 is **Share, Safeguard, Preserve**. Green OA is an important mechanism for openly sharing and preserving research outputs. This wording of this year's theme is directly taken from the Declaration to #DefendResearch Against US Government Censorship. [Learn more here][5]. ![Share. Safeguard. Preserve. It's your research. Whether you're new to the concept or have years of experience, this community call is for you. During this call, we will discuss the challenges and successes of promoting green OA on our campuses. We'll also dive into how green OA fits into the open science movement and how repositories help safeguard and preserve research outputs. You are encouraged to share your stories, experiences, and approaches to openness initiatives-–or you can kick back, listen, and get some ideas for next year!
