Description: The majority of psycholinguistic research relies on participants from Western, industrialized societies. This has limited our understanding of human language processing, making it difficult to tease apart general abilities from language-specific ones. In an effort to broaden psycholinguistic testing to more diverse populations, we modified a commonly used fast-mapping word learning task and were successful in capturing word learning by a remote population in Papua New Guinea who are largely unfamiliar with computer-based technology.
