Wiki Version:
This project tests competing predictions from the literature on negative evidence in inductive reasoning with predictions from the literature on interdimensional discrimination in associative learning. Series of experiments testing the effect of 'close' and 'distant' negative evidence (CS-) on generalization from positive evidence (CS+). In all groups, the CS+ (stimulus paired with the outcome) is an aqua (bluey-green) rectangle. The Close Negative group receives additional (intermixed) training with a slightly bluer or greener rectangle CS- (stimulus NOT paired with the outcome), and the Distant Negative group receives additional (intermixed) training with a black and white checkerboard rectangle CS-. - NSW05: causal judgement, 75% reinforcement, color and shape generalization assessed in blocked test trials. - NSW06: causal judgement, 75% reinforcement, color and shape generalization assessed in intermixed test trials. - NSW09: causal judgement, 100% reinforcement, color and shape generalization assessed in blocked test trials. - NSW10: fear conditioning, Single Positive and Distant Negative groups only, 100% reinforcement, color generalization assessed only. NSW09 and NSW10 are published as Experiments 1 and 2 in (NSW05 and NSW06 appear in Supplementary Materials): Lee, J. C., Lovibond, P. F., Hayes, B. K., & Navarro, D. J. (submitted). Negative evidence and inductive reasoning in generalization of associative learning.
