Description: Creative Arts Therapies (CATs) are characterised by the evidence-based use of the arts within a therapeutic relationship that relies on creative and experiential interventions. These therapies encompass a range of disciplines such as art therapy, dance-movement therapy, music therapy and dramatherapy. Dramatherapy is the CATs discipline that utilises the transformative qualities of drama and theatre with insights of contemporary psychotherapy, as well as other related human sciences. Dramatherapy incorporates a variety of approaches. Developmental Transformations (DvT) is one of these and has become widely used. DvT is an interactive, improvisation-based practice used in clinical and community-based care programmes for diverse populations. However, the existing evidence base is limited and little is known about the specific DvT in-session processes that lead to the effects attributed to DvT. This scoping review aims to identify and analyse literature that documents specific factors, specific active elements, possibly associated specific therapeutic attitudes and actions, mechanisms of action and (putative) mechanisms of change in DvT. The review aims to identify patterns and gaps in the existing literature and to propose recommendations for training, practice and future research.
