Description: White matter injury (WMI) is the most common type of brain injury among preterm infants, associated with neurodevelopmental deficits. One of the main causes of WMI is inflammation. Although there are still no treatments available for WMI, nutrition seems a promising candidate as it may prevent or reduce inflammation via different pathways. However, previous studies on early-life nutrition and white matter integrity in preterm infants are heterogenous in study design, methods and results. Therefore, this review aims to answer the following question: How do different nutritional strategies during the early postnatal period influence white matter development in children born preterm?
